The Balance of Power
Here’s the thing about wavelengths: it’s a bit of a science. We usually aim for that 254nm sweet spot for germicidal work or specific peaks for curing. The goal is to hit the material hard enough to flash-dry the ink instantly, but not so hard that you actually scorch the substrate. It’s a balancing act. Sure, cranking up the wattage lets you speed up the line. But be careful. If you push the power too far without a ballast that can handle the load, you’ll fry your filaments way sooner than you should.
Dealing with Heat and Glass
We use fused quartz for the bulbs because standard glass just blocks the UV. Quartz lets it fly right through. But quartz has its own quirks. It takes a real beating every time you start and stop the machines, expanding and contracting over and over. And man, these things gethot. If your airflow is blocked or your reflectors are covered in grime, the quartz will overheat. That leads to “solarization”—where the glass gets cloudy and your UV output just tanks. Keep it clean, keep it cool.
Swapping Them Out Without the Headache
