
Getting Your PCB Line Right with Gallium Iodide UV
Standard mercury lamps are fine, but they have blind spots. If you’re dealing with high-density interconnects or tricky photoresist curing, those blind spots kill your yield. That’s why we build gallium iodide (GaI) lamps. They hit the wavelengths that mercury just can’t reach.
Why GaI actually works
Here is the secret: we tune these modules to live in that sweet spot between 250nm and 350nm. Because the light hits the photoresist more effectively, it cures faster. A lot faster. This means you can push your conveyor belt to move quicker without worrying about boards coming out under-cured. It’s a huge win for your throughput.
The heat problem (and how to handle it)
Look, these aren’t just bulbs you screw in. They’re full systems. We use high-purity quartz so the UV light actually gets out instead of getting trapped. But there’s a catch. The power density is intense. The second you wire these into your line, things get hot.Really hot. If your cooling fans or chilled water loops aren’t up to the task, you’re going to have a bad time. The lamps will either drift in wavelength or just burn out way too soon. Don’t skim on the cooling.
Fitting them into your factory
Most of the time, we’re replacing old mercury systems that have started to drift. We know you don’t want to spend a week rewriting your PLC code, so we build these as drop-in replacements. They just fit. The real magic happens when you look at the resist edges. Since the GaI spectrum is narrower, you don’t get that annoying “light bleed” or scattering. You get crisp, clean traces. Fewer shorts during etching. Less waste.
One thing to watch out for
It’s not all magic, though. GaI lamps are a bit pickier than the old stuff. They hate voltage fluctuations. If your power supply is shaky or has a ripple in the current, the lamps will flicker. You might not even see it, but your boards will. You’ll end up with inconsistent curing across the surface, which defeats the whole purpose. Get a stable power supply, and you’re golden.
